Our Story
Open Kitchen was realized during the heavy floods and demolitions (Year 2024). When people were displaced they seeked shelter at Wajukuu art projects space. Wajukuu art project identified the people's need as they did not have places to cook their food since their homes were flooded.
As a community led response to the situation, we felt the need to start an Open kitchen where we served the victims of the flooding, breakfast and hot balanced meal. When we started the number was low but it kept increasing as days went on and later realized the food was not only served to the victims but also to needy people in our community.
People came from different areas to get a meal this was triggered by the harsh economic situation affecting our country. We felt the gap caused by economic hardship and realizing that families are forgoing meals, we decided to keep the initiative happening once a month. We have been having this initiative happening in our community where we collaborate with other community based organizations fostering our oneness and solidarity during difficult times.
