“Expression of a New Dawn,” is both a celebration and a testament to the transformative power of art within the Wajukuu Art Project and its Kids Club. Rooted in Mukuru’s informal settlement, the Wajukuu Art Project was born out of a need to counter the hardships of the community—violence, police brutality, and drug abuse ’To create refuge and need to reclaim their lives also wanting to infuse hope into their community through Art.

It has since grown into an oasis for the community and a safe haven for children, offering the children a nurturing space where they can explore art, imagination, and personal growth this gave rise to Kids Club. In this exhibition, children from the Kids Club present works that capture their worldviews and aspirations, allowing them to express the hope and beauty they see in their day-to- day lives despite challenging surroundings.

Each piece—whether in painting, thread art, cards or prints—reflects their dreams, community, and relationship to the environment. Through nature-inspired art, these young artists remind us of theimportance of conservation, symbolizing their role as the stewards of a sustainable future since art is an interconnection between humans and nature. The Wajukuu Art Project studio has long been a gathering place for these children, a space where they’ve felt a sense of belonging and growth.

Although we have had the chance to exhibit kids’ pieces in access banking halls in Nairobi during August which was well received. Holding the exhibition here, in the very community they’ve grown up in speaks volumes to the works on display and enriches its significance. This space isn’t just a gallery for the children in Kids Club it’s where they’ve found their voices, connected with mentors, and cultivated lifelong friendships. Their art pieces represent a “new dawn” for each child—a leap forward from the hardships faced by the Wajukuu founders into a vision of renewal, resilience, and unity where the children envision a better and brighter future By showcasing Art that springs directly from the lived experiences of the artist and the space that natured them ‘Expression of a new dawn” creates a moment where the act of viewing becomes an act of support and recognition how art can be used to express and free ones spirit.

Throughout this exhibition’s opening, visitors will experience not only the artwork but live traditional drumming and dancing performances, from the kids as these include some of the classes they have been offered therefore revealing the depth of cultural pride the children have absorbed. In this way, the exhibition becomes a shared celebration—a moment of pride for the children, the Wajukuu Art Project, and the entire Mukuru community.
